Incomprehensible Grief

As a parent, can you imagine anything that could remotely come close to the grief of losing a child? This photo shows parents saying 'goodbye' to their child killed Monday in the earthquake centered in Sichuan Province, China.

There is no time to prepare...no chance to say goodbye.

Lofty's family has been particularly saddened by this disaster because we adopted a little girl from Sichuan Province a few years ago. Her hometown of Deyang has been decimated. We pray for her birthparents and the wonderful people we met who care for the children in the orphanage in Deyang.

Our little girl is six years old...smart, funny, beautiful, and so full of life. We are blessed to have, apparently, been lucky enough to have saved her life twice.

  1. I can't imagine at all. Your daughter is just the age of my students--such a wonderful age. It's staggering to think of all the similarly bright, beautiful children who weren't as lucky as your daughter, who is also a blessing to you, I know.

  4. Hello.
I am chinese-american and my grandparents live near SiChuan province. That picture is so sad. Although generally, the situation is better than currently percieved.

  5. Wow Lofty. You really did save her life twice. My greatest fear is of losing one of my kids. Hopefully it will never be realized.

  6. as i have said before the worst part of what i do is telling parents that their child just died. if i could pay to never do it again i would pony up.

  7. It makes me feel actual physical pain to imagine ever being without my kids or anything tragic ever happening to them. The scene above made me cry because I can feel/imagine a fraction of what they must feel.

Give your daughter a kiss from me please!

  8. Will do, RadGirl. I find myself staring at that picture often...wondering how one goes on in life thinking anything else is even remotely important.

I sympathize. Death of your own child has to be the most painful thing in the world.

  11. I can tell you it sucks (I really can't think of a better term).

Lofty, give your daughter an extra hug and don't live too much in the future. Enjoy every day to the fullest.

    God bless,
