With thanks to PeggyU and no apologies to the
crackpots at PETA, we present this video
of botfly larvae removal for your viewing pleasure!
I showed it to my kids and told them that we have
to do this in the ER "all the time".
Now they won't even get the mail without a
liberal dousing of OFF!

I am so not watching that.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I remember the last time we had liver for dinner when I was a kid. Dad hated it, so when Mom served it we all got a lecture on the function of the liver (and its assorted parasites and afflictions). The dogs ate well that night.
ReplyDeleteHOWEVER, the door swung both ways. We also got treated to tetanus shots on a regular basis, since Dad had the pleasure of tending to a patient with tetanus. I think he was a little over-diligent about it. Got our asses whupped if we ran around without shoes on, too.
85,
ReplyDeleteHow could you?! You're inciting murder against bug kittens(formerly botfly larvae)! Murderer! Murderer!
I'm still waiting for an apology and a formal denunciation of the way this human being was treated from FETH, Flies for the Ethical Treatment of Humans.
ReplyDelete[shudder]Brings back memories of when I was in the Peruvian Amazon with a medical team - doing research for a book. These little bastards are incredibly gross. We had one guy whose botfly was burrowing down toward his chest bone, and the doc had to go in after it and dig it out. All we had was some lidocaine. It turned out to be a bloody mess, and I had nightmares for a long time after that.
ReplyDeleteI am flipping my shit after seeing that and never leaving home without my can of deet.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! combines my two loves, entomology and medicine.
ReplyDeleteDoctors must practice how not to say 'eewww
ReplyDeletenasty!' before a procedure like this.
I'm a dr mom so of course I could carefully pull one of those critters out if I had to, but yuck.
And one last comment, is there nothing that duct tape can't fix?
AC
Eww was right.. yet, like a car wreck, I had to watch till the end.. does this make me in need of a head exam?
ReplyDeleteI'm never going outside again. YUCK!! That's just nasty. I did like the creative use of duct tape, though.
ReplyDeleteDuct tape, aspirin, super glue, and baling wire ... most useful substances on earth. Oh, and WD40. My husband is always spraying that on things.
ReplyDeleteThose kids had to have been really, really stoned to have had that detatched, science-experiment like reaction. Were they using a roach clip to pull that thing out? Not.Normal.
ReplyDeleteI have killed so many mosquitoes tonight! I have three very itchy bites on my feet. And I just watched a thing on bot flies on television last night. My skin is never going to stop crawling!
