Congrats

Just wanted to say congrats to all the libtards out there on your great victory.  As a small business owner (yes, jackasses, I did build that) and health care provider, you took it upon yourselves to re-elect a socialist who wants to take everything i've earned and control my livelihood.   Especially want to give a shout-out to those single issue female voters.  Your fear that someone was going to stop you from sucking the fetus out of your vagina hole (that last appletini before some random frat dude knocked you up sure was tasty) has relegated any kids you do have to a life of abject poverty and reliance on government.  Choke down a few free birth control pills and that wont happen again.  (Of note I purchased a special shredder for applicants to the company who list "women's studies" as a major.  It makes a beautiful "whirring" sound.)  The good news is I no longer have to contribute to any charities, as all distributions will come from a 10 square mile cesspool on the Potomac.   There are a few iffy ones I may consider (you know, those scary ones with some religious message), but in their envelope I now send back the following:

Dear Sirs,

In light of recent events my disposable income will be dropping precipitously.  I believe your cause may be just, but you may be better off looking to the government for a handout.  If they refuse and you can provide me with signed affidavits of the chairman and a majority of the board of directors as to who you voted for, and the amount of government subsidy received over the past 4 years,  I will consider you an organization worthy of a portion of my meager remaining income.

Sincerely,

Someone Who Did Build It

Sadly, this post is so freaking awesome! I just wish it were not true. As a side, once he was reelected, I immediately chose not to support any charities. They can get it from the government. I don't care anymore.

  3. Wow, really? Generalize much? Because only uneducated (aka "not smart enough") women become pregnant? I guess my masters degree does me no good as a single mother, right? Since all some people can see is that I'm a single mother, not that I was engaged and my fiance decided to abandon us. Regardless, I still draw my nice salary, but I will admit to needing government assistance to get back on my feet. That's what it's there for. And I guarantee I've paid more into it than I've taken out. You really should try to not be so judgmental. Republicans and Democrats need to stop whining, stop trying to make the other seem like the enemy, and actually DO SOMETHING. Neither Obama nor Romney can fix all that has gone wrong. Unless both parties decide to work together, instead of giving speeches to appeal to the crowds, we're never going to get better.

  5. Sheesh SCRN. So, what then, the going gets tough and the tough...turn on each other? Doctors work their butts off in medical school, then internships, residencies. It can be 10-15 years of training, not to mention all the hard work of running a practice, and it all goes up in smoke because the whiny babies in our country want "free" health care?! Are doctors "entitled" to be in charge of their careers? YES!!! I wouldn't want their job for all the tea in China. It's really hard work, with dire consequences if things go wrong. Sorry you lost your business, but what a lousy attitude you have developed. One would think you'd have some empathy. And just wait until you need a GOOD doctor, and all that's left are the creepy, "I don't have time for you because I have 49 other patients to see before the end of the day" doctors. Good luck with that.

  8. I am so sick of hearing women complain about the trials and tribulations of pregnancy prevention. Greta, women who make less than $20,000 a year can (today) get FREE birth control pills, patch, ring, Depo shot (and STD testing, and pap smears) through Planned Parenthood. But 95% of the women I deal with who have an unintended pregnancy just didn't bother to take their pills. Can't tell you how many women tell me they have trouble remembering to take a pill everyday. Or that they don't like "hormones," but have no problem asking for Plan B, and want to use that as birth control. Even if you put birth control pills and Plan B over-the-counter and free of charge, these women just won't take it consistently. Like one girl told me, "I don't have sex everyday, so why do I have to take a pill everyday?" There is just no cure for stupid. Or lazy. And what about condoms?? They are cheap and readily available, but girls don't want to tell the BFs to put one on. When was the last time you heard a guy say no to sex if he has to put on a condom??

    ReplyDelete
  9. "but girls don't want to tell the BFs to put one on." So the male is passive in all this? They just can't automatically put one on? They have to be told? What....Mommy didn't tell me to do it?
If you are tired of hearing this maybe men need to jump in and be more proactive.
Of course there are stupid and lazy women. No more so than men who don't take any responsibility.
When was the last time a guy said "If you're not protected, condom or nothing"....no man EVER.
And that 95% number, show me the data you collected to come up with that.

      Delete
  10. "So the male is passive in all this?" Yep, they don't get pregnant and they don't care, yet women still want to be with these jerks. So if the girl doesn't want to be pregnant, she has to make the effort to protect herself. And why don't men care? We've made it easy for them. They figure the girl can just get an abortion. Is that the right attitude from the men? NO! So why do women go with men who treat them with so much disrespect? The problem goes so much deeper than just availability of birth control and abortions.

  17. Dear anon 12:20, I work with what amounts to government doctors, who are paid by the hour, not by the number of patients they see, and they bitch & moan if you try to double-book a patient with an ear infection with another patient who has bronchitis. If they were in private practice and got reimbursed by head count, they'd be double and triple booking. But why should they work hard, since they get paid the same even if they see no patients, and spend a couple hours surfing the web? And unlike the real (complicated) ER medicine, these docs are doing run of the mill stuff, that I could treat if I had a furnishing license. They're just lazy. When we go single-payer, doctors will be hourly grunts like everyone else, and they won't be motivated to go the extra mile. BTW, our patients are the ones who complain bitterly about how little the outside Medi-Cal doctors care for them. I work in college health, so our ability to serve is limited to urgent care, so primary care gets referred out.

Dear 911, sad to say too many nurses have been drinking the "free health care" Cool-aid, and have an axe to grind with doctors. Not me, I love working with (private practice) doctors, especially males; none of that estrogen rage and useless sentimentality crap that helps no one. If nurses want to be in charge more and make more money, go back to school.

911DOC, way to go man. A nurse disagrees with you and you immediately, with no hesitation give out abuse. No refutation of the argument just straight off venom. Why? Was it because she is female? Although it doesn't say that, or is it because she is a nurse and how dare she argue with a doctor? Come on! If she's wrong she's wrong and you should point it out but as soon as you resort to the nonsense you have lost.

Nightingale? What are you? A throwback to the 1950's? Come on, if you are a nurse you should be trying to be professional and not just staring with the big baby blue eyes at the doctors. Actually, re-reading your comment you are obviously just a receptionist in an office who takes phone calls and fills in appointment times and does not understand anything about nurses.

I am going to ask a question, feel free to answer it or ignore it or flame it - don't care either way. If as you say American doctors are so self sacrificing and highly professional, why do you need the push of more and more money to see patients? How can the NHS in the UK survive with senior doctors seeing lots of patients and getting the same money. Are you telling me that American doctors are more mercenary than UK ones? In that case you are self serving rather than self sacrificing.

"Bridge to sit under???" I have been unfailingly polite even in the face of some appalling abuse and bad grammar. I keep telling you I am not English so all your references are just plain wrong.

Nightingale, "Nurses who can't argue successfully with doctors are just insecure." No, they just need to learn to argue successfully. Insecurity has nothing to with it, or are we seeing a little of your psyche? How insecure are you if you can't work with women? Are you the old fashioned type of woman who bosses men about because of your gender and we let the little lady do her thing because she's just a woman and will get all hormonal and upset and start crying if we disagree with her? Certainly the way you are coming over. So to paraphrase yourself, "Do our profession a favour and become a professional".

So answer me this...this blog has a problem with Medicaeurs, uninsured people and the other unwashed masses. You abhor single payor, hate Ocare and think the present system is fine even though you constantly complain about misuse of the ER. BTW, EMTLA does suck but if you read a little history you would appreciate why it was put in place. Ambulances blowing past hospitals with critically ill people because they didn't have the golden ticket ie BC/BS. Umm people were dying because of this practice. I would hear what you have to say more if every once in awhile you would talk about injustices other than your own. Docs never spoke up at that time.....they still got paid. Where was the moral outrage then? There was none because one group of docs was willing to dump this group of people on those "lazy ass" government docs. So EMTLA was born and now you have this big mess. And maybe if the AMA hadn't spent all that money in 1949 to deny Truman's idea of a single payer, we would have a system in place to take care of people and not use the ER as a primary care clinic.
So bottom line...what do you want to see happen or you just gonna go with the status quo?

    ReplyDelete
  28. grumpy, post it again. I didn't block anything. you guys have fun.

anon above, emtala is a crock. ambulances did not blow by hostpitals with critically ill people on board. it was all a power grab. it was inspired by illegals trekking to the us to have their babies in the us thereby making them citizens.

I am all for single payer. the patient pays for insurance or pays their bill and don't patronize me with your idiocy.

  29. So let's see, Grumpy...nurses who disagree with you and don't join the Bash-the-Doctors bandwagon are bossy, insecure, and unprofessional? Does that pretty much sum up your opinion? And let's not forget "crying if we disagree with her?" Your sexism is showing. Pathetic. You assume way too much. Are you sure you're an RN? Your assessments are way off.

There is a saying, "Nursing is one of the few professions that eats their young". You're a shining example of that sad, but true statement. I also have a nursing supervisor that said "Men hold grudges for 5 minutes, but women hold grudges for 5 years." Also sad, but true. And since nursing is still predominately female, these abuses still hold back our profession from real progress. And not speaking out against our bad habits, commits us to continuing down this path of true unprofessionalism.

  30. PS Grumpy: As to 911Doc's comments to Anon12:20, I might not agree with his choice of adjectives, but you are not much better. You hide behind a thin veneer of civility, while you attack my 30+ year career of hard work with your own brand of contempt. At least 911Doc is honest about his.

  31. From Reynolds v. Mainegeneral Health, 218 F.3d 78 (1st Cir. 2000):

Congress enacted EMTALA in 1996 [sic], in the face of "the increasing number of reports that hospital emergency rooms are refusing to accept or treat patients with emergency conditions if the patient does not have medical insurance."
Read your history. I worked in the City Hospital in St. Louis in the mid 70's and saw it on a daily basis. I actually, if you would stop knee-jerking, agree with you that EMTLA is a disaster but was born out of a very bad practice. So whose the idiot now?
Nightingale, you defend 911's "sugar tits" and are crying about Grumpy's post? Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  32. anon,
neato. let's grant that ambulances were blowing by private hospitals with critically ill patients on an hourly basis.

    http://www.emtala.com/history.htm

you worked in a City Hospital. hmmm. a hospital set up specifically to take care of the poor and uninsured, one where residents learned their craft and high quality care was available to all.

so we pass a federal law mandating that private hosptials, who have to meet a bottom line, are now obligated to lose money.

hmm. medical costs have since skyrocketed and it's now hard to get insurance. weird.

i guess it all boils down to whether you believe health care is a right, but not just a right, a right to have the best health care regardless of your poor choices or poor circumstnces or poor planning. hmmm.

well, you have it now. and the numbing mediocrity that it will inevitably produce in care is already here. who will go to medical school now? who will do the ten year vascular surgery residency to be paid what is 'fair' as determined by a government committee? good for you sunshine.

oh, and don't we have lawyers in this country, and tort law? negligence? lawsuits? aren't these already in place to punish acts of overt negligence that you seem to think happened every hour prior to EMTALA? i happen to know we still have them.

so EMTALA sucks, you admit it. it was expanded far beyond its intent as all government mandates inevitably are so that we can no longer turn away anyone, not the person who calls EMS for a bruised pinky toe and not the oxycontin addict with 'chest pain' because they are out of their drugs. so you think that a bigger version of EMTALA will work better.

what color is the sky in your world.

and what about people without cars? doesn't everyone need a car? food? everyone needs that right? would be a crime to turn away people from a grocery store who are hungry would it not.

    zombies.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anon, not defending the adjectives used by 911, but there is a lot of contempt to go around here, you included. These doctors are at their wits end and are venting, so why not step back and use nursing assessment in a more objective manner? Take the high road, But no, you just whine, and don't argue points. And Grumpy joins in with his own contempt. In the end, 911 is right: the world your are advocating for is NOT SUSTAINABLE! It will fail utterly, and then let the rationing begin.

Posting on this blog is voluntary. If you really don't like what the doctors have to say, you are free to blog elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I am also free to post here and you are free not to read it. And I do argue points i.e. EMTLA.
As for the rationing, if you base providing healthcare on a system of who deserves it and t who doesn't, that is also rationing except it's based on whether we think you are worthy. And I don't think that's our place to do so.
"and what about people without cars? doesn't everyone need a car? food? everyone needs that right? would be a crime to turn away people from a grocery store who are hungry "
I can buy a junker for 1200 bucks, I can buy food at the dollar store or go to a food bank. There is no thrift store for an appendectomy.
Quite honestly, I think if people have to have the skinny in it (buy their own insurance), they will probably be more motivated to stay healthy. Funny, I agree with you that much of what you see is preventable. I read statistics of 40% to 60% of diseases are lifestyle related and skyrocket costs. People don't get that. See, I'm not a total brain dead libtard.
But to just stand your ground and say that the present system doesn't have some serious injustices in it for the patients and not just the healthcare providers is just sticking your head in the sand.
    Oh well, I'm done.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree. people need to pay something for their care.... means test it or something... but right now they do not. and ocare will not change this as many currently healthy folks will choose to pay a penalty to not buy insurance which will be cheaper than insurance, and then, do you think they will be denied care? no. the denial of care will come at the extremes of life and it will be done by committee. oh, and in addition we will get a whole new bloated government bureaucracy with people that can not be fired (like me!). you are a utopian. every system has it's injustices. the great thing about America is that until now, a significant portion of the folks left out are left out because of poor decisions they made, but in the future they will be left out by decisions our 'givernment'makes.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That's debatable about why people get left out. People behind a genetic eight ball should not be penalized or people forced out of insurance plans because of serious health condition. Also this country does have a history of racism, discrimination (I am assuming you're a woman so that would include you) and other inequities as all countries do. Perhaps I am Utopian but only because I believe we should always be moving forward to something better.
I'm not even a Christian but have always believed the "when you do this for the least" or however that scripture reads.
    Thanks for the discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  37. well, we SHOULD be moving forward to something better, but we often don't move this way. and simply passing legislation and shifting responsibility is actually moving backwards. and as to your Biblical quote, couldn't agree more, I did it for ten years, and amongst 'the least', there were also the entitled, who, if I am reading my Bible correctly, are used to describe people who were 'far from the Kingdom of heaven'.

There is nothing thin about my civility, nor is it a veneer. I too have 30 years, plus a few years in engineering before I became a nurse. My contempt was for 911DOC for being rude without reason. As usual on this blog a nurse makes a reasoned remark and whether it is right, wrong or just plain insane they are immediately met with abuse. No attempt made to answer the points made - AND YOU DEFENDED THIS!

You say you are a triage nurse who tries to add patients to an already full list? Don't know where you work but people who add patients to lists are receptionists - not nurses. Triage nurse is part of an ED (ER) nurses role but only part.

  40. Oh poor Nightingale, you are running with big dogs if you want to take on Grumpy. He is an erudite and clever RN blogger who I have read for years. Scottish, I believe. His posts are insightful and entertaining and not always complementary about the NHS. But they are never mean or below the belt. And there's the rub for you. Go check his blog out.....might possibly give you a more wordly intelligent view.

  42. we are mean?

"Shiiiiiiiit. If men got pregnant, birth control would be dispensed free in the bathrooms of every 7-eleven. Since 1492."

"Starbucks would offer lattes and surgical abortions. On every street corner."

"...if men had babies. Why is this even a fucking topic anymore?"

but absolutely, make it over the counter. 'course you would have to pay for it which makes that a non-starter because it clearly says in the consitution that you have a right to free stuff simply because you posess vagina and the inability to use it properly. hell, put it in the freaking water supply in all blue cities. between the lowered sperm counts from marijuana smoking and ortho-tri cyclen in the water the conservatives will be kings in short order.
