Rabies Shots

Rabies shots were the bane of every kids existence back in the day. After all, we all knew that the shots were extremely painful and given to you in your gut. Turns out that the shots were particularly painful and given in the abdomen and required an entire series to prevent the deadly disease.

These days we have a much better, more patient-friendly series of rabies immunizations for high risk exposure. There aren't many high risk exposures in the United States but bats are high risk. Manu Ginobli knows about them after his exposure shown above.

Also, a patient of mine knows about them after swatting a bat down with a broom in her upstairs. Problem was, she brought the still live creature into the ER so that we could "check it for rabies". I don't know what we did with the thing but I do know that I didn't get near it... maybe I woke up the pathologist... I can't remember.
